Brian Manzella Administrator. Official thread for my April feature story in Golf Digest. I can not get this to open so I can read about the torque in the swing. I have read it before when the article came out but can not find it now.
There's a video on Brian's Vimeo. My question now is how do I hold the chest facing away from the target, until I get the arms into the proper position half way down. Last edited: Jun 8, This video really cleared up the torque questions I had after reading the article. Thanks, really easy to understand.
Interesting watching Justin Rose practicing Beta torque before hitting shots at the memorial. He should have thought about that before he shanked the fairway bunker shot on 18. Click to expand Last edited: Jun 9, I do it by dropping the torso with a slight increase in knee bend.
Hogan did it with a slight increase in waist bend, which hurts my lower back. Isn't it that Hogan did it by turning his hips while keeping on pushing the club back on top. Got him to left arm parallel, Alpha torque still intact, Beta torque negatived, Gamma torqued positived, club lays off, returning to forward bend with right side bend, and left side extension starting.
When we analyze gamma rotation, we are looking purely at the kinematic of how much the club turns about itself. In the rotisserie chicken example, it would be how much the chicken actually rotated around the steel rod in the oven. Alpha beta gamma torque golf In a nutshell, the Gamma rotation is the angular displacement of the golf club around itself.
What are good rotation guidelines. With irons, 90 to degrees of Gamma Rotation is common at the top of the backswing, while a driver will have 70 to 90 degrees of Gamma Rotation. Since we use Impact as the general position to derive the gamma angular change, the address position will most likely have a number above or below zero unless the gamma angle is exactly as it would be at impact.
A typical downswing is roughly. Gamma Torque is the pure twisting action that the golfer applies to the grip to make that club turn about itself just like the rotisserie chicken. When we move into the world of kinetics, we must identify the resistance that the golfer will have to overcome to get a response from the torque. For Gamma torque, the resistance is the moment of inertia in the gamma plane of motion.
The distance from the mass center to the shaft is very small, so it depends on how much mass the clubhead has and how it is distributed. With the short distance, the resistance to gamma torque is very small. It requires very little torque from the player to rotate the club gamma wise.
