The first stereo Walkman-type player my brothers or I ever had was a Sanyo my oldest brother bought at Montgomery Ward in That also took 4 AA batteries. No radio on that, or rewind, IIRC. Yeah, I know all about determining the age by the "type of battery" corroded in the battery compartment. As promised, here are some more photos of the innards after I restored the battery connections -they were quite bitchy to solder, with all that corrosion to get out of the way.
I focused on the mechanism with the twin flywheels and the weird belt path. The smaller flywheel is actually a tensioner and transmits power to the spindles, through rubber idlers, when engaged. The belt it uses is short and stout and in fact, the original belt was still intact, if a bit loosened. The one in the pic is a substitute. The motor however is not all that bigger proportionally to newer walkmans.
I also took a photo of the motor speed trim pot -in a quite unusual position, reachable through the battery compartment, and presumable to be used with an external DC power supply -the batteries get in the way if installed. Now, I'm curious how long the walkman will last on NiMH batteries, rather than alkalines.
Will it be able to go past 10 hours. Yeah, OK, I know an ampmeter would probably give me a straight cold answer right away Last edited: Aug 11, Theres a nylon part in that series that breaks. If there was one Achille's heel to both home and portable stereo gear it was the utter fragility of pulleys and gears over time in some. So yes, do be gentle and stop the player before engaging cue and review Samuelbc New Tapehead. Sony walkman f1 I just got an old WM-F1 as well. The outside looks great but the tape playback speed is too slow, so my guess is that it's just an issue with the drive belt.
I opened it up a few days ago and the main belt is pretty easy to access but I believe there is a smaller one that can only be accessed if I remove the top PCB board. This seems tricky because all the wires are in the way even after removing the 2 screws that hold the top PCB board onto the lower one. Should I only replace the main belt or both need replacement?
Anyone knows the size and thickness of the belt s. That is, unless your WM-F1 uses a different mechanism than mine. Edit: Well, according to the SM there is indeed a second, buried belt. However, it is only used for REW. TBQH, if mine needed replacement, I'd simply not bother, since the main functions FF, Playback don't need it, or at most I'd replace it with a rubber band, since it's not accuracy-critical.

Keep it, you'll be surprised well, maybe not you, but "high enders" surely how well it may sound. Well, according to the SM there is indeed a second, buried belt. Where did you find this "SM"?
I've got the same model walkman that doesn't work and I'd love it if I could find all the specifications on the small parts. I picked up a WM-1, similar I suspect very cheap at an estate sale and it was corroded. I cleaned it good, but it isn't working and I was about to give up on it, and sell it for parts. I didn't see this thread in a previous search so thanks for the update!
I will double check my connections to see if they were eaten away. I see a lot of these on ebay and the FF RW almost always doesn't work. Point the tube as far into the volume control and give it a couple of squirts, wait a minute and see if the problem is gone. This is also a problem with headphone jacks, a dirty headphone jack can be brought back to life by spraying the male end of the headphone plug and immediately plug it into the player and rotate the plug.
Thanks for the advice. I can only get fast drying contact cleaner but that should work the same. I'll get back to you if that fixes the issue. MagneticBlood Serious Tapehead. The key point is to spray in volume pot and rotate fast the pot hundred times when still wet. Full rotation Cheers Sergiu. I would not use the spray from a can, especially if it is very strong. High chance of getting contact cleaner in places you don't want it in walkmans.
Spray it out to a separate container, and use a needle and syringe to inject directly into the pot. Pacific Stereo Dorko Pacifico. If it were me, I'd follow up with Faderlube after cleaning it. Cheers Sergiu. Thank you everyone. Problem solved, but a few more Qs.
When the contact cleaner arrived I opened the back of the Walkman to get a better position on the voliume wheel. I heeded odgcwrtw's warning and gently squeezed the contact cleaner onto a towel to allow a drip of CC to form. I wiped it on the wheel and rotated it back and forth for about a minute and left it, after which it worked like normal.
So thank you guys for the help with that problem. What would you guys recommend to repair it. It has caused no issues so far but I would rather not have corroded contacts. What would be the best way to deal with them. You must log in or register to reply here. Share: Email Share Link.
