The Open 2023 LIVE: Third round golf leaderboard as Brian Harman leads by five after third round

Justin Rose has not brought anywhere near his A game so far this round as the Englishman is wayward off the tee once again. Many people fancied Brian Harman heading into this week after his T6 finish last year. The diminutive lefty has been showing good form of late and looks to have brought his best game to Hoylake so far.

Three birdies have him at -3 as the American makes the turn. Ah, the pot bunkers. They are a devil if you get in them and Tony Finau finds out first hand as his ball comes to rest right up against the lip. He can do nothing but push it off the bank and further back into the bunker before ten hacking out. Hovland keeps his par streak going while Thomas finds his first birdie of the day to join his playing partners at level par thru five.

Back to even par for Rory who gets a bit greedy with his approach into the fourth. The attacking shot comes up just short and trickles into the greenside bunker. Rahm, meanwhile gets a huge slice of luck. His approach shot from the rough narrowly avoids that same bunker before trickling off the right side of the green. A par for him and Rose, who misses a good look at birdie from a similar position to Justin Thomas a few moments ago.

Bogey, birdie, double bogey start for Morikawa. The American goes out of bounds with his second shot and pays the price with a six on the third. JT has a good look at birdie again after another nice iron into the green. The birdie putt runs out of steam, however, and misses on the low side.

A small sense of frustration from the American early on. More difficulty for Rose as his approach into the 3rd just drifts left. British open leaderboard 2023 live From there, he leaves himself around 11 feet for a par A much-needed par save to avoid three bogeys in a row. Some good early birdies from this group on the second.

Morikawa bounces back from his opening-hole bogey with a birdie three while Hatton moves into the red after a very nice foot birdie putt. A simple enough par for Hovland while Finau has a good look at birdie which just misses on the high side. Pars all round. When you get a good break in links golf, you have to take advantage.

That is exactly what Rory does on the second. His tee shot is way right but the Northern Irishman gets a drop because of the grandstand and delivers a brilliant approach shot which comes to rest just 3ft from the hole. The Swede is enjoying a very nice year on the DP World Tour and is making moves early on Thursday with back-to-back birdies as he makes the turn.

The par-five 15th coming up shortly so a real chance for him to make a real impression on this leaderboard if he can keep things steady. A couple of solid pars for Finau and Hovland and Thomas joins them after his good look at birdie comes up short. McIlroy and Rahm do well to recover from their poor tee shots and make solid pars to escape unscathed.

The internal out-of-bounds claims another victim, this time in the form of Rickie Fowler. What a shame after such a solid round to that point. Photo: british open leaderboard 2023 live His second shot ends up short of the right greenside bunker but the American tries to get too cute with the chip, with his ball catching the lip of the bunker and falling back in.

Jon Rahm joins him there while Justin Rose finds the fairway bunker. Wyndham Clark is loving major championship golf at the minute. Cam Smith found the fairway bunker off the tee and does well to save par. Up to -2 and a tie for fourth for the American. Scheffler gets up and down well from the greenside to make birdie at the last. Another very solid round from Scheffler but once more, a round that threatened to get away with him after some wayward putting.

Still, the world number one is nicely positioned at A solid Thursday for all three. The 18th may be a par five but there is plenty of trouble on this hole with an internal out-of-bounds down the right-hand side of the rough. Adam Scott is one of the first players to find out his harsh reality as he sends his first tee shot straight in.

His second shot is hardly any better and flies way left. More trouble for the defending champ off the tee as Smith finds yet another hazard. Back to one over. Fowler has been plugging away nicely today and gets his reward at the 15th with a birdie to move into the red at If you play this hole correctly, there appears to be a great chance of birdie at Cam Smith and Clark are the latest to cash in as the defending champion moves back to level par while Clark bounces back from his bogey on the hole prior.

This was a bit earlier, but you have to see it to belive it. The ball is stunned into the bank of the bunker, rolls up and over the crest before cantering down into the hole. What a way to end his round. Wonderful imagination. Perfect execution.

A quite incredible shot on 18 from Sepp Straka. And it just gets better for the Englishman. From about 26ft, he goes ahead and knocks it in for his third birdie in a row. A par for Scheffler but Adam Scott drops one at the 16th having found a fairway bunker off the tee. Not the ideal way to end for Spieth as he finds himself in a fairway bunker and can only just hack it out.

Still, -2 has him sitting nicely and right in the thick of it. If Cam Smith and Scottie Scheffler could merge their talents, they would be near unstoppable. Scheffler has the ball on a string from tee to green while Smith is making almost every putt he looks at. He gets out at the second time of asking but merely finds the rough again on the other side.

It looks like a big score is brewing but the US Open champion pours in a lovely putt to escape with just a bogey. Birdies all round again on the 15th and Fleetwood is now just one shot off Lamprecht at the top. A deft chip out of the rough sets up a simple tap-in birdie to move to The rain certainly appears to be more consistent and heavier right now.

Homa does the same as these two head to the 11th. Just like Straka and Lee before him, Harman misses the green in regulation, going over the back. He was making everything yesterday but the putter has dried up so far today. Just like Cam Young and Jordan Spieth, these two are moving in the wrong direction as they both make birdie having failed to find the green in regulation on the fourth.

Three birdies in a row have him at -3 and inside the top ten. Betting on the masters golf 2019 long shots He sits there alongside Tom Kim who rolls in a very nice putt on the 14th for birdie. Two missed birdie chances at the previous hole and now two bad misses for par for these two on seven. Both moving in the wrong direction as things stand. Another hole and another look at birdie for McIlroy who is striking the ball superbly.

It comes to rest on the left edge of the green but the foot effort just drifts to the left. Three birdies in the first nine but Rory will feel like it should have been more. A bit of work to do for these two on the third green. A pair of tidy two putts, though, and they remain as they were. Just one bogey on 11 but rounded out with three birdies in his final four holes.

Neither American can take advantage of their birdie opportunities on the sixth as they remain at -4 and -3 respectively. A couple more Europeans getting themselves high up on the leaderboard. Back to -4 for him, one ahead of Sharma who remains at Five-shot lead overnight.

Two holes later, that lead is three. Oh, how quickly things can change. Rahm is up at -6 and Fleetwood joins him after rolling in a nine-foot birdie effort. Harman is tentative with his birdie putt and leaves it short. Another chance created for McIlroy after a nicely-judged iron out of the second cut. A nice par and he stays five off the lead.

A bogey for Homa having gone over the back of the green. The American has started very slowly today. Cam Young has endured a poor run of form this year but he clearly feels at home in these links conditions. The big-hitting American takes care of the par five to move into the top five at Perhaps a bit of adrenaline for the leader as he goes long on the first and the American sees his par putt just catch the lip and stay up.

Only his second bogey of the tournament as he drops back to He misreads the putt, setting it out too far to the right, but knocks in well for his par, as does Homa. This a moving day to match all moving days with birdies dropping all over the place. Day makes his second in a row to move to -5 while Sharma makes par.

A few quieter holes for these two but Jordan Spieth breaks that streak with his first birdie of the day at the fourth. British open leaderboard 2023 live Up to -3 and underway for his round. The perfect response from a disappointing fourth hole for Rory. Two driving irons - off the tee and fairway - are hit perfectly with his ball running up and onto the green in two.

Simply incredible. The Spaniard was given benign conditions and he has ruthlessly taken apart Hoylake this morning. That is the lowest score in the Open at Hoylake. Both these two are wild off the tee, Day way right, Sharma way left. Anything Jon Rahm can do, Nicolai Hojgaard can do just as well, it would appear.

The Dane has made an electric start to his round today as he rolls in an footer for his fourth birdie of the day through only seven holes. Another one bites the dust. Not his greatest stroke and he remains at Max Homa makes the most of his superb approach shot and gets himself back to -1 after a bogey on the second hole.

Up the last he heads and a par would see him set the record for the lowest round at Hoylake in an Open championship. A third divine approach shot in as many holes sets up yet another birdie opportunity. This is the closest of the lot and he makes no mistake this time. The Dane took care of the par-five fifth to move himself up to -4 for the tournament.

Who knows if Brian Harman will come back to the field but a high finish at the Open will do his Ryder Cup ambitions a world of good if nothing else. And it just keeps getting better. Well, now the Spaniard is seven under par for his round and -5 for the tournament after he rolls in a footer for birdie on the 16th. A monster drive a dialled wedge gives him another great look at birdie from about nine feet He had to take advantage of the par five and he does!

A beautiful iron into the par-three sixth leaves Tom Kim with little over 10 feet for birdie and he converts for his third in a row, joining Rahm and a host of others at Birdies at the last for Smith and Fitzpatrick who move to -1 and -2 respectively with rounds of 68 and Very solid stuff but you suspect both are just playing for money at this point with Harman way ahead at You suspect Rory will be licking his lips having seen the early good scoring on offer and the world number two cashes in straight away.

Driver off the tee, wonderful approach and he rolls in a ten-footer for birdie. Rahm has company at -3 with two more Europeans, Richard Bland and Nicolai Hojgaard, finding more early birdies to reach The South Korean has been struggling with a grade-one ankle injury after rolling it on Thursday.

In gentler conditions, the American failed to press on after a really promising front nine and ends on You have to feel that he should have found a couple more coming in. Playing alongside former champ, Stewart Cink, he has to settle for a bogey after his long par putt comes up short.

A nice crop of players hanging around -2 and making the most of these benign morning conditions. Well his streak comes to an end with a par on the 13th, but the Spaniard has made an almighty move up the leaderboard with another birdie at A couple more coming in and he is right in the thick of it.

A certain Rory McIlroy gets underway in just over 15 minutes alongside Max Homa - that should be a lot of fun. The two Europeans are playing together and get their third rounds underway in the perfect fashion with a set of birdies at the first. New to Kayo. Lee posted a three-under round, recovering from two bogeys in the first four holes with three birdies and an eagle.

Day had six birdies and two bogeys as he stormed into contention, chasing his first major since Defending champion Cameron Smith is a distant two-over, but will play the weekend after a staggering clutch play at the final hole. Smith needed a birdie to get inside the cut-line at three-over when, from yards, he hit a stunning approach to inside two-feet, allowing him to tap-in for an incredible eagle.

Rory McIlroy is best-placed among the pre-tournament favourites at one under as world number one Scottie Scheffler and defending champion Cameron Smith needed miraculous shots at the 18th to make the cut. Harman surged to the top of the leaderboard at the Royal Liverpool course thanks to long birdie putts at the second, third and fourth before his chip into the par-five fifth hit the flag to tee up a simple putt for a four.
