The Open Championship

Just not happening for Rory. Simple as that. It was a fiery start but the putter has gone ice cold since then. A great iron into the 17th is left unrewarded as another putt flies by. In the meantime, Max Homa has fought back nicely, with a lovely birdie on 17 moving him back to -2 for the tournament.

A wonderful iron hangs on the left edge of the green and gives him a great look for birdie at 10 feet. Only one birdie so far today for the Englishman who needs a rousing finish to get up near Harman. The American has a lengthier look at birdie but misses out to the left.

A few quieter holes from this pair almost ends in style with two lengthy putts. They are both excellent efforts from quite some distance, grazing the edges but just not dropping. A marvellous display of short-game excellence from the Frenchman who creates a birdie opportunity from an awkward stance and takes full advantage to move to He could well have a say in things tomorrow.

What was I saying about a hot streak for Straka. His playing partner, Cam Young, is still right in the thick of it at -5, though. Far from the ideal start to the back nine for Fleetwood as he finds himself in the greenside bunker after two. The perfect start to the back nine for the Austrian who holes a footer for birdie at the tenth. He joins that group at He caught fire yesterday on the back nine - can he do it again today?

Like Rozner, Grillo is not showing any signs of vacating the top of the leaderboard as the Argentine makes a nice birdie on the 11th. Two under par for his round currently and up into the top ten. It was a shaky start but Brian Harman has bounced back nicely and it just gets better on the ninth.

Fleetwood heads a bit right off the tee but he gets up and down well. British open leader board Sharma - a shot back at -5 - also makes par. Both Harman and Fleetwood fail to find the fairway off the tee but recover nicely to give themselves looks at birdie. Fleetwood feels like he is just forcing the issue a bit too much as another just grazes the edge. Swollen ankle and all, Tom Kim has put together another mighty-fine round.

A couple more pars for these two at the 12th. Spieth remains quite a distance back but a couple more birdies for Cam Young would do his chances tomorrow a huge boost. The Frenchman has been hanging around the top of the leaderboard all week and vaults into the top ten again with a sumptuous chip-in eagle at the 15th.

Very nicely done. What a way to end your front nine. A three-under-par front nine of 32 has him up in second on Very nice. The 13th has not been an easy hole today and Rory realises that, playing it save with his iron into the par three before knocking in a two-putt for par. The 14th is tricky too but after that, there are birdies to be had Viktor has gone about his business quietly today but what a superb round he has put together.

Just one bogey and the Norwegian finds his sixth birdie of the day at the last, rolling his ball in nicely from just under 25 feet. Both players find themselves in trouble after their second shots. Harman is short, Fleetwood is right, but both show excellent touch to get their chip shots close and leave relative tap-ins.

Two pars and onto the eighth. Sharma almost finds an unlikely birdie at the eighth but his ball comes up just short. He remains at -5, though, alongside Day, and both are still right in this tournament. A very nice par putt from Straka keeps him somewhat in the conversation at Back to -3 and six back of the lead. Could that light a fire in Rory to go low in these last six?

Many will be hoping so. Goodness me, that was close. Fleetwood is just begging for his ball to wander left at the death and fall in the cup. One birdie and five pars is a solid start. Another very nice surge up the leaderboard comes in the form off Thomas Detry whose birdie outt on the 18th refuses to drop. Something of a nerve-settler for Harman who plays the par-five fifth perfectly, nursing a long putt down to tap-in range to move back to A bit of left-to-right but the Englishman pushes it wide.

Well, after a disappointing bogey on the seventh, Cam Young responds in superb fashion with two exquisite irons into eight and nine. As they walk off the ninth, there are plenty of umbrellas out. The rain certainly appears to be more consistent and heavier right now. Homa does the same as these two head to the 11th.

Just like Straka and Lee before him, Harman misses the green in regulation, going over the back. He was making everything yesterday but the putter has dried up so far today. Just like Cam Young and Jordan Spieth, these two are moving in the wrong direction as they both make birdie having failed to find the green in regulation on the fourth.

Three birdies in a row have him at -3 and inside the top ten. He sits there alongside Tom Kim who rolls in a very nice putt on the 14th for birdie. Two missed birdie chances at the previous hole and now two bad misses for par for these two on seven. Both moving in the wrong direction as things stand. Another hole and another look at birdie for McIlroy who is striking the ball superbly.

It comes to rest on the left edge of the green but the foot effort just drifts to the left. Three birdies in the first nine but Rory will feel like it should have been more. A bit of work to do for these two on the third green. A pair of tidy two putts, though, and they remain as they were.

Just one bogey on 11 but rounded out with three birdies in his final four holes. Neither American can take advantage of their birdie opportunities on the sixth as they remain at -4 and -3 respectively. A couple more Europeans getting themselves high up on the leaderboard. Back to -4 for him, one ahead of Sharma who remains at Five-shot lead overnight.

Two holes later, that lead is three. Oh, how quickly things can change. Wgc match play leaderboard 2023 Rahm is up at -6 and Fleetwood joins him after rolling in a nine-foot birdie effort. Harman is tentative with his birdie putt and leaves it short. Another chance created for McIlroy after a nicely-judged iron out of the second cut. A nice par and he stays five off the lead. A bogey for Homa having gone over the back of the green.

The American has started very slowly today. Cam Young has endured a poor run of form this year but he clearly feels at home in these links conditions. The big-hitting American takes care of the par five to move into the top five at Perhaps a bit of adrenaline for the leader as he goes long on the first and the American sees his par putt just catch the lip and stay up.

Only his second bogey of the tournament as he drops back to He misreads the putt, setting it out too far to the right, but knocks in well for his par, as does Homa. This a moving day to match all moving days with birdies dropping all over the place. Day makes his second in a row to move to -5 while Sharma makes par. A few quieter holes for these two but Jordan Spieth breaks that streak with his first birdie of the day at the fourth.

Up to -3 and underway for his round. The perfect response from a disappointing fourth hole for Rory. Two driving irons - off the tee and fairway - are hit perfectly with his ball running up and onto the green in two. Simply incredible. The Spaniard was given benign conditions and he has ruthlessly taken apart Hoylake this morning. That is the lowest score in the Open at Hoylake.

Both these two are wild off the tee, Day way right, Sharma way left. Anything Jon Rahm can do, Nicolai Hojgaard can do just as well, it would appear. The Dane has made an electric start to his round today as he rolls in an footer for his fourth birdie of the day through only seven holes.

Another one bites the dust. Not his greatest stroke and he remains at Max Homa makes the most of his superb approach shot and gets himself back to -1 after a bogey on the second hole. Up the last he heads and a par would see him set the record for the lowest round at Hoylake in an Open championship. A third divine approach shot in as many holes sets up yet another birdie opportunity.

This is the closest of the lot and he makes no mistake this time. British open leader board The Dane took care of the par-five fifth to move himself up to -4 for the tournament. Who knows if Brian Harman will come back to the field but a high finish at the Open will do his Ryder Cup ambitions a world of good if nothing else. He hit what he thought was a good shot into the 18th only for it to find a bunker, forcing him to play back toward the fairway and turning a birdie chance into bogey.

Rahm opened with a He kept his own hopes measured, fully aware of gallery support for the long-haired lad raised about an hour up the coast. The biggest surprise to everyone but the 6-foot-8 Lamprecht was seeing an amateur atop the leaderboard at the final major of the year. He qualified by winning the British Amateur at Hillside, a links course just north of Liverpool on the Lancashire coast.

Irish amateur Paul Dunne shared the hole lead at St. Andrews in I just personally think I believe in myself, and I guess stepping onto the first tee box … you should be believing that you should be the best standing there. The group at 68 included U. Spieth was at 69, a strong start considering the shank he hit from tall grass and the golf ball above his feet on the eighth hole.

The ball was declared lost and he made double bogey. He did just that until finding a pot bunker off the tee and finished with a bogey. The bunkers were frightening, with players unsure if the ball would settle in the middle or be up against the vetted, sodden walls. Either way, it was about as penal as a water hazard. Plenty of people did a good job and shot a low score today.

The bunkers around the 18th were particularly diabolical. There were 19 scores of double bogey or worse on the closing hole on Thursday. The last time at Royal Liverpool in , there were 26 doubles or worse the entire tournament. Thirty-one players managed to break par, and players like McIlroy at even par hardly shot themselves out of the championship.

McIlroy won the last time at Royal Liverpool, opening with rounds of and going on to a wire-to-wire win at under par. Tiger Woods won in Hoylake in at 18 under. This is a different Royal Liverpool, slightly lengthened and with a new par-3 17th hole that wreaked havoc for some — Phil Mickelson made double bogey, Lucas Herbert a triple — but this day was all about the bunkers.

Crouching over the ball with his legs wide apart, Lamprecht crunched his last drive of the day into the fairway and more than yards. One of the tallest players ever to compete in the Open, he was leading by three strokes. He wound up shooting 5-under 66 for his three-way share of the lead. The last amateur to be in first place after the opening round of an Open was Tom Lewis, who shared the lead with Thomas Bjorn at Royal St.

So, did it all come as a surprise to Lamprecht, a hard-to-miss player who was certainly turning heads at Hoylake. This month, he won the British Amateur at Hillside, a course an hour up the coast along the Irish Sea, to qualify for the Open for the first time. Lamprecht went out in the eighth group of the day and made three birdies in a four-hole stretch from No.

He chipped in from 40 yards for birdie at No. He gave one back at No. Lamprecht said his stock drive goes about yards and that he can get to a yard carry, the kind of length that was impressing another big hitter, Bryson DeChambeau, on the range this week.

Lamprecht was taking plenty off his drives in his first round, he said, because of the roll on the fairways on a beautiful morning at Hoylake. Oosthuizen was impressed with what he saw from Lamprecht, especially his composure in the glare of being the Open leader for much of the round. It also shines a positive light on his foundation. His father was 6-foot-4 and the shortest of the last five generations, with his great grandfather about 7-foot.

For all the concern over the new par-3 17th at Royal Liverpool, the real headache was No. The two-time major champion drove out-of-bounds and later sent his ball from one greenside bunker to another, before blasting out through the green and winding up making nine for an over 82 — his highest round in a major. He was coming off his first — and only — birdie of the round and drove it well enough on the 18th that he could go for the green.

Kho left his first shot in the bunker left of the green. And then another. He finally blasted out sideways into high grass, only for his next shot to go back into the same bunker.
